The VLN Test and Setup weekend, 21-22 March 2014, was the first opportunity for Team, Drivers and MEC to experience together the most challenging race track in the world, the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Bottom line: Success - from puzzled and intimidated to confident and fast!
22 March 2014
The first laps were scary; all drivers reported that the MEC's back end wanted to get airborn in the fast low frequency bumps like Tiergarten. Having figured out how to adjust the dampers, new settings were experimented with, click by click, and at the end of the second day all drivers agreed that although not yet perfect, this was a compromise that could be raced with. MC even got to try it out in the rain, and came back with a big smile saying it was great as a wet setup!
Sport Auto snapped MC heading out of the pits for his first stint on Saturday testing, sporting his new Bell helmet design for this season, which is a reprise of his first motorbike helmet design from nearly 30 years ago. Still looks fresh and distinctive today. As Jochen from Frozenspeed commented, thankfully we won’t have to peer at the pictures to see Meyrick's trademark red gloves any more to work out who is driving! In the Sport Auto picture, Stefan is holding MC momentarily to let another car pass on the pit lane before waving him out.
Sport Auto also caught Carsten as he dives into the final apex of the dreaded Wipperman complex hotly pursued by another Astra Cup car; as we perfected the set up of the car. At this point, as you can see from the lack of roll compared with the following car, we were still too stiff at the front end and chasing understeer. Thanks to Sport Auto for the great pictures.
We have included a few of our own photos in the gallery below, as well as several from the faithful track-side photographers that we always enjoy receiving photos from; water marks are preserved for identification and rights protection.
